Distances are huge when you travel in Siberia, but if you are ready to take your time and want to reach the very heart of Russia, take the Trans-Siberian Railway and let the rails carry you!
Two typical cities of Siberia with their own architecture and charm. They are both easily accessible from Novosibirsk, and are ideal destinations for a weekend out of Novosibirsk (click here to see all our weekend ideas).
Hiking, rafting, horse-riding... there are things to do for everyone! You can go from Novosibirsk to the city of Gorno-Altaisk, the starting point of all excursions in the mountainous region of Altai. The trip will take you about 10 hours by train (the most convenient option is to take an overnight train). If you plan to go to Altai for a weekend, the best is to stay at the Lake Aya. If you have more time, you would be better to go to Teletzkoye Ozera.
If you can visit only one place in Siberia, it is probably the best choice. Classified as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1996, this lake is the largest natural freshwater reservoir in the world and has unique flora and fauna. You need 30 hours by train on the Trans-Siberian Railway to get to Irkutsk from Novosibirsk.
